Why Premium Agency Websites Are a UX Nightmare

Vanity Fair: Why Premium Agency Websites Are a UX Nightmare (And What a Marketing Site Should Actually Be)

While researching the market and reviewing dozens of websites from the world's leading digital and creative agencies, I expected to see benchmark solutions. After all, these are the people who dictate web trends. But instead of cutting-edge UX practices, I stepped into a "horror exhibition."

It feels like the industry has forgotten the golden rule of the web: a website is built for the visitor, not its creator.

The "Awwwards-Disease" Epidemic

What is happening on creative agency websites today can be described in one word: ego. Designers and developers are building sites not for clients, but for festival juries and their peers. The main goal is to scream, "Look at how we can manipulate the DOM! You can't do this."

Driven by the panic of looking "too simple," studios go all out, completely destroying the user experience in the process. Here are just a few symptoms of this widespread disease:

  • Endless Preloaders: In an era where milliseconds count, you are forced to watch a spinning logo for 30 seconds while heavy WebGL scenes load in the background.
  • Scroll-Jacking & Custom Cursors: Taking away the user's control over their own browser and mouse, forcing the page to scroll with unnatural, sluggish physics.
  • Visual Chaos: Flashing background videos, abrupt dark-to-light mode shifts that physically hurt the eyes, and completely illegible typography.
  • Background Music: A ghost from the 2000s that has inexplicably become the norm again in the "premium" segment.
  • Hidden Basics: You can't figure out the most important things: Where am I? Whose site is this? Where are the case studies, pricing, and services? It reaches the point of absurdity—a beautiful email address on the contact page coded so you can't even highlight and copy it.

This shows an absolute disrespect for the visitor and their time.

What Should a Marketing Website Actually Be?

A marketing website is a business tool. Its job isn't to collect likes on design platforms; its job is to generate leads, convert traffic, and build trust.

  1. User Respect Comes First. A visitor must understand who you are, what you offer, and how you can help within the first few seconds—without sitting through a preloader. Navigation should be intuitive, not a hidden-menu escape room. Text must be high-contrast and readable, and contact info should be copyable in one click.
  2. Tech-Forward Yet Easy to Maintain. A site shouldn't be a fragile house of cards built on heavy libraries and code patches that breaks when a content manager tries to change a headline. A proper website relies on clean architecture. It must scale easily, be fully manageable via a CMS, and not require a senior developer just to publish a blog post.
  3. Flawless Performance. Fast loading times, high Core Web Vitals scores, and smooth operation across all devices. Any animation must be justified and serve a single purpose: helping the user absorb information by setting the right accents, not distracting them.
  4. Conversion Focus. Every visual effect is secondary to the business goal. If a complex animation drops the conversion rate or draws attention away from the Call to Action (CTA), that animation must be removed without hesitation.
Design for the sake of design is dead. Modern premium web development isn't about exploding 3D models paired with a trendy soundtrack. It’s about a highly complex technological foundation working so fast, cleanly, and invisibly that the user simply enjoys interacting with your business and glides effortlessly toward a purchase.

Build websites for people, not for portfolios.
